QUANTUM DEVICES & NANOPHOTONICS RESEARCH LABORATORY

The research interests of this group are

- New Generation Infrared Sensor Arrays and Thermal Imaging
- Nanophotonics
- Quantum Semiconductor Devices Based on Compound Semiconductors

Current research activities of this group include the design, growth, fabrication and characterization of novel electronic and photonic semiconductor devices and sensor arrays based on III-V and II-VI compound semiconductors. The group work is currently concentrated on the development of modern infrared sensor array technology for high performance third generation thermal imaging systems. The experience and capabilities of the group have matured to the level of fabricating and integrating very large format mid- and long-wavelength infrared photon sensor arrays (focal plane arrays, FPAs) for thermal imaging applications covering a wide spectrum. The current work includes growth, processing and characterizing quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) FPAs based on alternative compound semiconductor systems, large format HgCdTe sensor arrays, quantum dot infrared photodetectors, as well as multi-color and multi-band infrared sensor arrays capable of detecting infrared radiation in more than one wavelength range.

Being supported by various funding agencies and industry through extensive research projects, these studies will establish the main research interests of the group in the near future.
