| Dr. Akan's current research interests are in:
- next-generation wireless networks,
- biologically-inspired communications,
- nano-scale and molecular communications,
- cognitive radio networks and dynamic spectrum management,
- sensor networks,
- satellite and deep space communications,
- signal processing for wireless communication,
- multimedia communications,
- underwater acoustic communications,
- network information theory.
He conducts and leads the research activities over these broad research fields as the Director of Next generation Wireless Communications Laboratory (NWCL).
The research work in NWCL has been funded by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), TUBA (Turkish Academy of Sciences), Middle East Technical University, ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, STM, and many other industrial programs and projects.
